Guardians of a Community Treasure

Lake Mattoon isn't just a beautiful natural resource — it's the drinking water source for the City of Mattoon and the lifeblood of communities across Coles, Cumberland, and Shelby counties in Illinois.

"Clean Water, Strong Economy"

The Friends of Lake Mattoon

A healthy lake means healthy communities. Clean water sustains local businesses, supports property values, draws recreation and tourism, and protects the long-term economic vitality of our region.

Friends of Lake Mattoon is a community-led nonprofit working to ensure the lake's health, clarity, and long-term vitality through conservation efforts, community education, and responsible recreation stewardship.

Lake Mattoon, Illinois

Three Pillars of Lake Stewardship

Conservation

Monitoring water quality, protecting shoreline ecosystems, and advocating for policies that safeguard the lake's long-term environmental health for both wildlife and people.

Community Education

Engaging residents, anglers, boaters, and local youth with programs that build awareness about clean water stewardship and the importance of Lake Mattoon.

Clean Water, Strong Economy

Economic Stewardship

Clean water is the foundation of a thriving local economy. We champion the connection between a healthy lake and the prosperity of businesses, families, and communities who depend on it.

Recreation & Community

Lake Mattoon is more than a water source — it's the heart of our community. From dazzling fireworks over the water to beloved annual traditions, the lake brings people together in ways that make life in Central Illinois truly special.

Keeping Our Shoreline Clean

From early spring through fall, Friends of Lake Mattoon organizes hands-on cleanup events along the lake's shoreline and surrounding areas. Our volunteers remove debris, invasive plants, and litter that threaten water quality and the health of local wildlife — keeping Lake Mattoon clean for everyone who depends on it.

Meet Our Officers

Dedicated community members committed to preserving Lake Mattoon for generations to come.

Katie O'Dell

President

Katie O'Dell

Lake-trained since childhood — literally driving boats before cars — Katie's connection to Lake Mattoon runs deep. Her dad was one of the organization's founding fathers, and today she leads with that same legacy in her heart, working to ensure future generations can make the same cherished memories on this lake.

Jessica Ingram

Vice President

Jessica Ingram

A St. Louis weekender since 2016, Jessica brought her then 3-month-old son to Lake Mattoon seeking water, nature, and a break from city screens. Here's the twist — she has an irrational fear of deep water, yet somehow spends every weekend at the sandbar. Her son has never known life without this lake, and she's determined to keep it that way.

Krystal Little

Secretary

Krystal Little

When Krystal and her husband found property on Lake Mattoon, they expected a weekend escape — they didn't expect to find their people. The lake quickly became home, and the community became family. She'll admit she has no quirky lake tricks up her sleeve, but what she does have is a deep passion for preserving this place and the friendships it creates for generations to come.

Roberta Gingerich

Treasurer

Roberta Gingerich

Raised just a mile west of the dam, Roberta remembers the campground and beach the way they were — the train, the pavilion dances, the towns that thrived alongside a lake full of life. Times change, but her belief in this place never did. She'll also quietly mention that she nearly drowned here as a five-year-old — technically no lifesaving measures were required, but for a five-year-old, it absolutely counted. Today she keeps the books with the same care she has for the lake itself, and she's convinced the best days are still ahead — measured not in spreadsheets, but in more smiles than frowns.

Angie Rawlings

Events Coordinator

Angie Rawlings

Five years ago Angie and her husband Mitch traded their old address for a home on Lake Mattoon — a move she jokes was the only way she'd ever convince him to leave his favorite fishing spot of 54 years. What started as Mitch's lifelong lake is now a place they both proudly call home. If you're out around the lake, there's a good chance you'll spot them cruising by on the golf cart, stopping to chat and hear the stories that make this community so special. As Events Coordinator, Angie channels that same warmth into creating moments that bring people together — and she's just getting started.

Behind every clean shoreline and healthy water quality report is a dedicated team working behind the scenes. Our Conservation Committee leads the strategic efforts to protect and restore Lake Mattoon for future generations.

Conservation Committee
Jason Little

Conservation Chair & Lead Strategist

Jason Little

A lifelong agriculturalist with nearly five decades of roaming 38 states, two territories, five countries, and two continents — and still has yet to find a pair of sunglasses that don't look good on him. Jason's roots run deep in the land, and his connection to water runs even deeper. He's spent the last decade reshaping farming systems for better environmental outcomes, and Lake Mattoon is his real-world proof that clean water and a strong economy aren't opposites — they're the same goal. As Dr. Seuss once said, "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." Jason cares — and he's confident his grandchildren will tell their kids they were on the right side of this one.

Newly paved Lake Mattoon marina with riprap shoreline and boat slips
Newly paved marina parking lot, riprap erosion control, and boat slips — Lake Mattoon Marina & Campground Revitalization, 2024

In 2024, the City of Mattoon was awarded an Open Space Land Acquisition Grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for approximately $600,000 — designated for improvements to the Lake Mattoon Marina and Campgrounds as part of the Marina and Campground Revitalization Project.

This grant was made possible in part because Friends of Lake Mattoon donated $5,000 to demonstrate community support for the City's application. That act of community investment was the catalyst that helped unlock $600,000 in state funding for Lake Mattoon.
